A Local Area Network is not the only way for computers to share peripheral devices and send messages to each other. Two major non- LAN connectivity alternatives are:
- File transfer software
- Printer/peripheral sharing devices.
It is important to consider these LAN alternatives carefully if the functionality they offer meets stated business and functional requirements. The sophistication offered by LANs comes at a price in terms of both dollars and the level of technical expertise required to install and manage them.
